When an American Idol was George Washington and a Desperate Housewife foraged in the woods for quail
eggs and the odd blackberry (the fruit, not the cell phone). When a
Burgher was the mayor of an early Dutch settlement and not a Quarter
Pounder with cheese. When Ethan Allen held a musket and not an After
Christmas Day Sale. When wild turkey was followed by a hunter in
tights and a waistcoat, and not a beer chaser. Great homesteads dotted
the eighteenth century landscape like sturdy sailing ships.
One of these great farms survives to this day, only a stone's throw from Valley Forge Park. Pickering Mead Farm. Main Line Animal Rescue is proud to announce that Pickering Mead Farm is now our new home and the site of our soon to be completed new shelter and will provide a safe haven for our homeless dogs and cats for years to come. A new role for an old homestead. A great opportunity for us to help thousands of companion animals. And you can be part of it.
We need to raise the necessary funds to complete the actual shelter building, and to create an endowment to help ensure that our veterinary expenses will always be covered. To this end, MLAR is offering many naming opportunities, from interior kennels for $5000, to our new cat condo room for $15,000. The family, foundation, or corporation that sponsors our Puppy Center for $100,000 will have their name displayed on a plaque for all to see. Individuals who donate $10,000 will have their names displayed above an indoor/outdoor kennel and the hundreds of dogs housed in that run over the next thirty years will have a safe place to stay due to their generosity. All donations, large and small will be greatly appreciated and will help us realize our dream of a safe place for our animals. And why support Main Line Animal Rescue's Capital Campaign?
- Main Line Animal Rescue is the largest animal shelter in Chester County that spays or neuters every dog, cat or rabbit prior to placement.
- We are also the largest animal shelter in Chester County conducting home visits prior to placement for each and every animal we place. We insist, and make sure, that every family adopting one of our dogs has a secure fenced yard.
- MLAR has pulled thousands of animals from overcrowded Humane Societies and SPCA's in the past ten years. Once our shelter is complete, we will be able to increase the number of dogs and cats we can house comfortably.
- MLAR has fought tirelessly over the past few years to improve conditions for dogs trapped, bred and sold in our state's notorious puppy mills. Our new shelter will provide a temporary sanctuary for dogs surrendered by commercial breeders, while they receive medical care and are rehabilitated by our volunteers.
- The spacious, and recently renovated, bank barn will provide an ideal space for training our dogs. Teach a dog to walk well on a leash, or to sit on command, or to offer his paw, and that dog has a better chance of finding a home. MLAR has provided training for hundreds of dogs since its inception in 1997.
- Main Line Animal Rescue is a no-kill shelter, boasting one of the highest placement rates in the country, ninety-eight percent.
- Our fifty-eight acres of fenced pens and walking trails provide our dogs ample room in which to run and play.
- We have a small army of over eighty-five committed volunteers who walk every dog in our facility, every day. They wash towels, bathe dogs, spend time with our cats and kittens, transport animals back and forth to the vets, and interview prospective families.
- Our new shelter will include seventy-nine large kennel runs (the majority of our runs will be indoor/outdoor), heated floors, a cat room that allows cats to intermingle and roam free, a puppy room that resembles a nursery, and an isolation ward with an area for animals recovering from surgery.
Our "Raise the Woof" Campaign will ultimately raise 2.3 million dollars to cover construction costs and to create our endowment.. Over half of that amount has already been raised.
